A One-Year Master Degree, which aims to provide the necessary linguistic and cultural skills to work in international and socio-professional contexts. A complete course of study to understand the political, cultural and economic resources of the countries of the Middle and Far East.

One-Year Master Degree in Oriental Languages and Cultures (MiLCO) is held at IULM’s Rome campus:

  • Teaching centre: Palazzo Sciarra via Marco Minghetti 17 00187 Roma.

20 scholarships offered by Fondazione Terzo Pilastro – Italia e Mediterraneo are available, 15 of them to cover the total cost of the attendance (€ 5.000) and 5 to cover part of it (€ 3.000).

The Master aims to train:

  • Professionals with language skills and proper techniques capable to work with the Arab and Islamic world and China.
  • Cultural-linguistic Mediators capable of operating in the international arena and in the various contexts in which the employment of translators as well as linguistic and area experts is required: trade, development cooperation, design, international diplomacy, publishing, import-export, entrepreneurship, marketing, mass-media and communication, migration, fashion, multilateral organizations, scientific research, educational and social sectors, tourism.

The Master is divided into the following modules:

  • Laboratory of English Language (advanced)
  • Laboratory of Arabic Language (basic and advanced)
  • Laboratory of  Chinese Language (basic and advanced)
  • Written and Oral Linguistic Mediation - English (advanced)
  • Written and Oral Linguistic Mediation - Arabic (basic or advanced)
  • Written and Oral Linguistic Mediation - Chinese (basic or advanced)
  • History and Civilization of the Far East • Islamic History and Institutions
  • History of Religions
  • Laboratory of Computer Science Applied to Translation
  • International Law

The language laboratories are mainly based on the consolidation and analysis of sectorial languages and technical lexicons (political, diplomatic, economic, financial, legal, administrative, religious, media and communication).

Teaching is organized in lectures, assisted teaching laboratories, master-classes, conferences, internships and a final dissertation. At the end of each module or teaching workshop, the students will have to take a learning evaluation test in order to obtain credits.

Classes will be held on Thursday and Friday from 9.30 a.m to 5.30 p.m from January to July 2017;  on  Wednesday, Thursday and Friday  from 9.30 a.m to 5.30 p.m., in September 2017.

Attendance to the Master (for no less than 80% of the overall activities and at least 80% of the lectures) allows the recognition of 60 credits, 4 of them for internships or other professional activities(workshops, tutorials, simulations) enabling students to benchmark themselves in the working environment and show their abilities with a view to professional positions.


20 grants are available; 15 of them will cover the overall tuition fee (€ 5.000 each) and the remaining 5 will cover part of it (€ 3.000 each).
