Art Market Management

Director: Prof. Vincenzo Trione – Coordinator: Prof.ssa Alessia Zorloni

This Executive Education Master Course tackles the various economic, fiscal and legal issues facing collectors, companies and foundations in the management and enhancement of their collections. The aim of this course is to provide professionals with a wide-ranging skill set that allows them to manage not only artistic content itself, but also the legal and fiscal aspects of art investments. The course boasts the involvement of expert industry professionals who will examine the opportunities available in various fields: art and collectables markets, management and promotion of collections, legal and fiscal aspects of art investments, taxation of works of art, resale royalties (droit de suite) and contract preparation.

This Executive Education Master Course is intended for professionals such as private bankers, financial planners, lawyers and accountants who are interested in taking advantage of the new opportunities offered by the art market in terms of diversifying assets and investment portfolios; as well as anyone working in the art world, such as curators, gallery owners, museum directors, art advisors, and legal advisors to auction houses and private foundations.

This course is organized into five modules dedicated to the following subjects: the Art Market; Collecting and Wealth Management; Management and Promotion of Collections; Art Law; Art Taxation. Students will be able to participate in a series of workshops during the course focusing on topics such as the contemporary photography market, the cataloguing of collections, art appraisal, and the calculation of an internal rate of return (IRR) on art assets. Furthermore, students will be taken on a study tour to London so that they can visit Frieze, one of the world’s most important contemporary art fairs, as well as participate in Christie’s Post War and Contemporary Art auction. This study tour is also designed to complement the work carried out in the classroom thanks to an impressive programme of visits to world-renowned contemporary art collections (Tate Modern, Serpentine Gallery, Saatchi Gallery, Newport Street Gallery, Zabludowicz Collection, Whitechapel Gallery). Students will then complete their coursework by carrying out a final work project on a topic that has been agreed upon with the faculty beforehand, and which will be presented and discussed before a commission of faculty members and professionals.
